"Goddard Residence" (Aquae Sulis)

The Goddard Residence, located in the small coastal sea side town of San Remo in Victoria’s Bass Coast, overlooks the Bass Strait and the southern seaside entrance of Western Port Bay. I worked closely with the owners in the design of this home whilst working for a building company in the Latrobe Valley.

The home is set back into the property with beautiful gardens and a warm welcoming atmosphere. From the access road on the northern side of the residence, the home displays an unassuming modern styling with high roof lines whilst strategically concealing it’s coastal aspects to the south. Utilisation of mixed materials and clever design draws focus to the fully double glazed boardwalk entrance. At night the boardwalk entrance and garden are spectacularly lit, offset on the east with rich timber panelling and a high natural stone wall that continues inside on the west.

Once inside, the space opens out into a split level, open plan and fully double glazed dining and living area with beautiful and amazing views of the ocean to the south. The ‘butterfly’ roof with clerestory windows to the north and east (both formerly concealed from the boardwalk entrance),

appears to float creating a light and open atmosphere. The clerestory windows and glass entrance panels add extra light to these spaces and add heat to the large thermal mass of the home. With the high ceiling spanning these areas, the lounge on the upper level with a higher floor achieves a more intimate ambiance even though the ceiling is over three metres high. From this vantage point, it looks down to the open plan dining and kitchen.

The split level nature of the design follows the site contours incorporating the main entry, lounge, dining and kitchen areas, forming a central hub. The remainder of the home branches off from the hub in two directions; the east wing houses a study with private deck leading to the master bedroom and adjoining ensuite with walk in wardrobe, and the west on another split level up from the entry, accommodating two separate guest bedrooms and bathroom, laundry and double garage with built in storage cupboards and extra space for work benches.

For the most part, the design keeps services to the north and by doing so, it increases the available area for glazing on the south side of the home in order to maximise the coastal views. Through passive solar design and careful planning during the design stage, solar heat gain is maximised during the colder months of the year, requiring less energy than average to maintain comfortable living. Similarly in the hotter months, large sliding doors at either end of the home can be opened to create a cross ventilation affect and cool the home with a pleasant sea breeze.

Not long ago I met with the Goddard’s to see how the house has settled and talked about its performance during a variety of recent natural events. Experiencing a magnitude 5.4 earthquake and a torrential one in one hundred year storm with extremely high winds, the house has remained solidly in place. From the outside, the house has also transformed from a building site to a beautifully established home with inviting planted gardens and lawns.

This design has indeed undergone a metamorphosis from house to home.

Lastly, I would just like to thank the Goddard’s for giving me the opportunity to work with them in the design of a wonderful home and the journey it has now led me to.
